Who we are

From a Missed RV to the Main Street Shop: The Story of Happie Hippie

Every great adventure has a turning point—the moment where things don’t go according to plan, and you have to decide whether to pack it in or lean into the wild. For us, that moment happened on a crisp evening at Lake Moomaw in Covington.

We had packed up, eager for a classic weekend under the stars, expecting our RV to meet us right at the campsite. But as the sun started to dip beneath the tree line, it became very clear: the RV wasn't making it. Suddenly, we went from imagining a cozy night on wheels to realizing we were completely unequipped for the night ahead.

With the clock ticking, we scrambled into Covington to gather whatever basic supplies we could find. We ended up racing through the aisles of the local Walmart, watching the minutes tick down to closing time. Hustling through neon-lit aisles just to secure the bare essentials for a night in the woods felt entirely wrong. Out here, surrounded by the stunning Alleghany Highlands, the preparation should be part of the joy, not a stressful midnight race.

As we drove away with our last-minute haul, the idea started brewing. Why wasn't there a dedicated, local spot right here? A place that didn't just sell gear, but actually understood the rhythm of a weekend on the water or a night by the fire? The seed for a true, rugged camp store was officially planted.

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place not long after. We were out on the highway, watching the miles roll by on a road trip down to visit family in Mississippi. With hours of open road ahead of us and the excitement of our new dream buzzing in the car, we started tossing around names. We wanted something that captured a laid-back, community-first vibe but was completely rooted in a love for the outdoors. Somewhere between the Virginia border and Mississippi, the name hit us perfectly: Happie Hippie Camp Store.

What started as a missed connection and a late-night supply run turned into a vision for a home base for backcountry explorers. Today, when you walk into our shop at 531 Main Street, you’re stepping into the reality of that road trip dream—rugged, reliable, and always ready for whatever the wild throws your way.

How does this feel for the website? We can easily tweak the tone or add specific details if you want to emphasize the "camp boutique" style or include a mention of the local trout streams!

Tracy Klein didn’t just want to open a retail shop; she wanted to build a home base for the adventurers of the Alleghany Highlands. With a vision for meaningful community impact, Tracy brings a blend of big-picture strategy and hands-on grit to the Happie Hippie Camp Store. Whether she’s securing local partnerships or scouting new gear, she sets the tone for everything we do: keeping things rugged, reliable, and rooted in a love for the outdoors. To Tracy, the best days are the ones spent with muddy boots and a line in the water.
